For some reason, Asian-inspired product packaging always catches my eye; take Nobu Sake for example. Nobu Sake packaging was designed by ChappsMalina for the world-famous Nobu Sushi brand. The sleek, organic form was inspired by bamboo and very fitting for this contemporary, elegant restaurant.

Odate Magewappa - Traditional Japanese Woodwork

Adrian Ma | Design, Inspiration, Left Brain, Must-have, Products, Right Brain | Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Magewappa, which literally translates to “bent-woodware”, is a 400-year old traditional Japanese wood craft originating from Odate City in Japan’s northern Akita prefecture. These unique pieces are created by thinly shaving a perfectly straight-grain cedar wood, only found on the eastern side of the Shirakami Mountains. This specific type of 100-year old cedar wood is required due to its ability to endure the demanding production process.

Taking meat packaging back to the basics

Adrian Ma | Branding, Design, Illustration, Left Brain, Products, Right Brain | Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

This meat packaging concept by UK designer Chris Chapman made me smile for two reasons: (1) The brown paper packaging pays homage to butchers and meat shops of old. (2) The labeling is simple and educational, letting the consumers know instantly which part of the animal they are purchasing

Product, branding, and typography done right

When I first saw this toy created by Argentinean Art Director Javier López Pereyra, I was strangely satisfied by how every aspect of the product fit together so nicely. Coined El Ramón, this delightful limited edition figurine was inspired by 50s/60s concepts of spaceships and robots - think “The Jetsons” meets “War of the Worlds” and “Lost in Space”.
