Art & Copy is a terrific documentary about the Advertising industry, chock-full of insights from the best in the business: Lee Clow (TBWA\Chiat Day), Jeff Goodby & Rich Silverstein (Goodby, Silverstein & Partners), Hal Riney (Publicis), Dan Wieden & David Kennedy (Wieden+Kennedy), and a host of other notable names.
Designers and Advertisers don’t always see eye-to-eye on most things creative, but Lee Clow said it best in this documentary, “There are now coffee table books made of Toulouse Lautrec art, but back then he was just trying to get people to buy a drink and pay cover charge to get into the Folies-Bergère. So, I think we are in the art business…when we do it well.”
Paramount Pictures has teamed up with infamous graffiti artist Banksy to bring us the world’s first Street Art disaster movie, “Exit Through the Gift Shop”. After an acclaimed premiere at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, “Exit Through the Gift Shop” will be opening in selected cities across the USA starting April 16 to May 21.
Dirty Hands - The Art and Crimes of David Choe
I first heard about David Choe through his prison art and was impressed with his gritty creative talent. Upper Playground has created a documentary which takes an in-depth look at his philosophy on life, art, and his reformed views after his incarceration. “Dirty Hands” will begin screening on April 30th, 2010 in Los Angeles and then make its way up North to San Francisco on May 21st.
Ever since reading Angels & Demons, I have been intrigued by how ambigrams are created and presented. I came across Logo Design Love’s blog and they have a nice round-up of ambigram logos done in 2008. One of my favorites is mentioned in the comments section - the 20th anniversary logo for The Princess Bride. The logo and the background environment are integrated beautifully!
Before your favorite celebrities are shot on film, there is a whole team of artists who create the concept art and storyboards for these blockbuster flicks. Adam Brockbank is one of these minds and his work is gorgeous. He’s done character and setting visualizations for movies like Spiderman 2, Tomb Raider, Troy, Xmen, The Harry Potter series, and the list goes on.
Do yourself a favor and go watch Ironman. Not only is the movie extremely entertaining, but Prologue sets a new standard for end credit sequences with their colourful 80’s Tron-inspired wire frame models. Props to the motionographer mastermind Danny Yount.
