Coke vs Pepsi. Mcdonalds vs Burger King. PC vs Mac. These are a few of the many heavyweight head-to-head brand wars we see in the media every day. Who doesn’t remember the Pepsi Challenge “Taste Test” commercials or the hugely popular Apple “Get a Mac” commercials. Well, there’s a new battle brewing in the Socal billboard advertising space - BMW vs Audi.

After my RONA post about cross-promotional ideas within other brand ad spaces, I was intrigued by this strategy and went searching for other examples. The BMW vs Audi battle is a great one, with back-and-forth guerrilla takeovers of the competitions billboard space. How far will these companies take it?

The brilliant thing is that these brand wars add buzz and popularity to both brands! Maybe rival brands are working together all along?

  1. Photoshop. Some Audi fan got butthurt that BMW won the billboard war. Go to Santa Monica, the far right board doesn’t exist. Sorry Audi guys. There is a reason that BMW is the Ultimate Driving Machine.

  2. Thanks for the info Joe. I used to live in Socal but have been living in Asia for the last 3+ years so I didn’t get a chance to check out the billboard myself.
